TopicRacism Among the Well-Intentioned: Implications for Intergroup Perceptions, Interactions, and Interventions

Abstract:   This presentation considers the subtle ways that racism is currently expressed and identifies important social consequences of this bias.  Relying on social psychological evidence of biases among Whites toward Blacks in the US, it describes the nature of contemporary racism and the role of implicit prejudice in discrimination, and it explains how and when these biases shape interracial outcomes and interactions.  These processes are illustrated in the context of medical interactions and racial healthcare disparities.  The presentation concludes with a discussion of implications for personal, training, and policy interventions.
