 Linda Smith Colloquium

Topic: "The secret to rapid learning: How biased learners create biased learning environments"

Learning depends on both the internal mechanisms that do the learning and on the environments which contain the data on which those mechanisms operate. Efficient learning requires that the internal machinery and structure of the input align such that the machinery can find the relevant regularities. In this talk, I will consider the idea that there is a good match between the learning machinery and the learning environment because the machinery does the learning also plays a role in generating the statistics (and thus biasing) the data for learning. The talk focuses on visual learning, faces, objects, and object names.
