DESCRIPTION:<p><strong>Russell Poldrack, PhD</strong></p><p>Albert Ray Lang Professor of Psychology</p><p>Stanford University</p><p>https://psychology.stanford.edu/node/3229</p><p>https://poldracklab.stanford.edu/</p><p><em>Topic:   </em>The future of fMRI in cognitive neuroscience</p><p>Abstract: Cognitive neuroscience has witnessed two decades of rapid growth, thanks in large part to the continued development of fMRI methods.  In my talk, I will question what this work has told us about brain function, and will propose that cognitive neuroscience needs to change in at least three ways. First, I will argue that we need a change in research practices that will make the results of cognitive neuroscience more reproducible. Second, I will outline the need for approaches that can help integrate across the burgeoning literature, using multiple levels of shared data.  Finally, I will argue that the research approach used in neuroimaging is largely unable to answer the questions that we expect it to answer, and that we need to move towards methods that support the establishment of selective associations between mental operations/representations and brain activity</p>
