I study social intelligence. Much of my work is devoted to understanding the self: its contents, limits, and perceptual beginnings. Another line of work studies the mental systems that support coordination in human social life, especially recursive mentalizing and common knowledge. More broadly, I tend to study the sorts of concepts that get invoked when people are trying to determine how to lead their lives, including the self, morality, happiness, and meaning in life. I approach these problems using the tools of behavioral psychology (incl. psycho-physics) and AI, while drawing on insights from philosophy, game theory, and evolutionary biology.
